Berlitz Levels and the Common European Framework of Reference
Before starting any language program, we assess your current skills, discuss your goals, and define the level you’d like to achieve. The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) developed by the Council of Europe offers a standardized system to describe language abilities across Europe. It ranges from A1 for beginners to C2 for near-native proficiency.

Berlitz Level 1 | CEF A1
You can communicate with elementary questions and answers in simple situations, e.g., when it comes to personal information.
You correctly work through other typical situations using your foreign language knowledge, such as introducing yourself, dealing with facts and figures, ordering a meal, or asking questions. In a conversation, you can participate in a simple way if your conversational partner speaks slowly and helps with repetitions.
Berlitz Level 2 | CEF A2.1
Your basic skills in simple social and business contexts are sufficient to understand easily formulated information and to repeat it again correctly. With your grammatical knowledge, you can hold simple conversations in at least one of the present, past or future tenses.
You are able to describe people and typical activities at home and at work. You express likes and dislikes in simply structured sentences. You can obtain and understand information for everyday tasks, for example, when booking a trip, when shopping or dealing with general problems on the phone.
Berlitz Level 3 | CEF A2.2
At the intermediate level, you can capture the general content of a private or business conversation. You need to be familiar with the topic. You can start, maintain and end a conversation and thereby use the language in a range of situations, even though you may make one or two errors.
When attending professional conferences, you can give instructions, explain a simple problem, and propose a solution. You are also able to guide visitors through the company or to report about the current status of a project. You can form and politely reply to invitations, express congratulations and preferences, and voice consent, refusal or a complaint.
Berlitz Level 4 | CEF A2.3
You understand information on familiar topics and conduct prolonged, general conversations, in which you actively make suggestions or give advice.
You are able to describe and acquire familiar objects. Negotiating a contract or terms of employment, establishing professional contacts, and dealing with official procedures properly also present little problem for you.
Berlitz Level 5 | CEF B1.1
You can give coherent explanations, and conduct conversations on a range of situations and topics, though you may be hesitant or occasionally search for the appropriate words. On the job, you are able to ask and answer common questions. Furthermore, you are able to give simple instructions for work processes.
With your foreign language skills, you feel comfortable with simple conversational situations and discussion in the private and corporate sectors (e.g., about the quality of a product/service). You can understand and apply all basic sentence structures and thus properly express ideas and their consequences. In addition, you master some complicated sentence structures and their corresponding appropriate verb forms.
Berlitz Level 6 | CEF B1.2
Your advanced foreign language skills enable you to easily communicate in many professional and personal situations, and thereby apply different modes of expression - even in challenging situations.
You can easily follow conversations and discussions with multiple native speakers, and actively participate as needed, for example, by asking for an explanation. In addition, more demanding situations, such as consulting a lawyer, accountant or other expert, represent no problem for you. Discussing a project in the foreign language is just as easy for you as voicing your personal opinion. With your knowledge, you are able to conduct long phone calls, make travel arrangements, and respond appropriately to unexpected problems.
Berlitz Level 7 | CEF B1.3
You can contribute your own views, arguments and ideas in discussions, and present your point, even though you may sometimes miss one or two words. You also understand sayings that native speakers use.
In your professional life, you are also able to take on management duties, present concepts, summarize discussion topics, and master complex, cognitively demanding situations.
You can use your foreign language skills for further study in your private, academic or professional life.
Berlitz Level 8 | CEF B2.1
You can correctly and efficiently communicate during demanding situations and tasks, such as managing a meeting or a professional (sales) presentation. Participation in conversations in social and professional environments is easy for you, including using the phone in a foreign language.
You speak confidently and with self-assurance when meeting business people. You can easily express yourself using nuances and also understand lectures on challenging topics.
Berlitz Level 9 | CEF B2.2
You can communicate efficiently with various audiences on a variety of familiar and new topics. You meet virtually all private and academic requirements.
You are able to participate confidently and effectively in discussions and meetings, express views, and present your proposals in a discussion with several participants.
You can also organize work easily by telephone. In addition, you are able to describe things clearly and in detail, voice ideas, and use correct terminology. By doing so, you are able to add style to your conversation.
Berlitz Sprachlevel 10 | CEF C1/C2
You can express yourself in a natural and efficient way in all conversations - be they on practical, social, academic, vocational or abstract topics.
You can give detailed explanations and construct detailed theories on both concrete and abstract topics. You also have no difficulty expressing views with sensitivity on controversial topics, or preparing complex reports on work-related topics.
