Why take a placement test before starting a language course?
If you have not spoken a language for some time, you do not necessarily need to start again from scratch. You may still remember vocabulary, grammatical structures and familiar content, even if you cannot recall them immediately. A placement test helps you assess this existing knowledge before your course begins.
Your skills may also be uneven: you might understand written texts well but struggle to find the right words in conversation. That is why both your online result and your speaking skills should be considered when choosing a course.
The aim is to find a starting point that builds on what you know. You can avoid unnecessarily repeating material you have already mastered or joining a group that requires knowledge you have not yet acquired. This helps you focus on making progress in class.
What does your placement test tell you about your language level?
The online placement test assesses your vocabulary, grammar, listening and reading comprehension. The result gives you an initial assessment of your current language level. At Berlitz Augsburg, we can also assess your speaking skills in a personal conversation.
CEFR levels and Berlitz language levels
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) distinguishes six proficiency levels from A1 to C2. Berlitz uses its own scale of ten language levels. Our overview of Berlitz language levels and CEFR levels explains how the two systems relate to each other.
The placement test helps you plan your further learning. It is not a recognised language certificate. If you need official proof of your language skills, you can find information about our language examinations in Augsburg.
Personal language assessment at Berlitz Augsburg
Alongside the online placement test, Berlitz Augsburg also offers a personal oral assessment of your language skills. In a short conversation, we work with you to establish how confidently you use the language and which language course suits your existing knowledge.
We will then be happy to offer personal advice, without obligation, on our German courses, English courses and other language courses.
