Which telc German Exam Should I Choose?

Before selecting a telc exam, we assess your current language level with an oral test at the Berlitz Language School in Augsburg and help you choose the exam that best matches your goals and language skills. Here is a selection of the available telc exams and certificates:

What can you do at Level A1?
At Level A1, you can communicate in very simple ways about concrete needs (e.g., introducing yourself, food and drink, shopping, housing). You can use some very basic grammatical structures.

How is the exam structured?
The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 65 minutes. Usually, the oral exam follows immediately without additional preparation time.

Written Exam:

  • Listening Comprehension: 20 minutes
  • Reading and Writing: 45 minutes

Oral Exam:

  • 11 minutes (typically with three other participants)

The telc A2-B1 test is an exam that assesses general language skills at two proficiency levels simultaneously. It provides a detailed evaluation of your competence in reading, listening, writing, and speaking, indicating whether you have reached A2 or B1 in each area.

How is the exam structured?
The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 100 minutes. The oral exam is usually conducted immediately after the written exam without preparation time.

Written Exam (1 hour, 40 minutes)

  • Listening Comprehension: 25 minutes
  • Reading Comprehension: 45 minutes
  • Writing: 30 minutes

Oral Exam (16 minutes):

  • Typically conducted with another participant

Your Skills:
At Level B1, you can communicate simply and coherently in everyday life, when traveling, and in your areas of interest. You can talk about experiences, describe goals, and justify opinions. You generally use key grammatical structures correctly. You are familiar with topics such as government agencies, work, shopping, health, children, and housing.

How is the exam structured?
The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. Before the oral exam, you have 20 minutes of preparation time. The oral exam may take place on the same day as the written exam or on a different day.

Written Exam (2 hours, 30 minutes):

  • Listening Comprehension: 30 minutes
  • Reading Comprehension/Language Elements (Vocabulary and Grammar): 90 minutes
  • Writing: 30 minutes

Oral Exam (15 minutes):

  • Typically conducted with another participant

This certificate demonstrates advanced German language skills.

Your Skills at Level B2:
You can express yourself clearly and in detail, as well as argue and negotiate successfully. You have a broad vocabulary in your field and on most general topics. You have a good command of grammar.

How is the exam structured?
The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes.

  • Reading Comprehension/Language Elements (Vocabulary and Grammar): 90 minutes
  • Listening Comprehension: 20 minutes
  • Writing: 30 minutes

Before the oral exam, you have 20 minutes of preparation time. The oral exam lasts around 15 minutes and can take place on the same day as the written exam or on a different day.

telc German C1 assesses general German language skills at an advanced level. The exam is intended for adults who need German for social and professional life or academic studies.

What can you do at Level C1?
At Level C1, you can express yourself spontaneously and fluently. You are familiar with idiomatic expressions and can adapt your language style. You maintain a high level of grammatical accuracy.

How is the exam structured?
The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 3 hours and 40 minutes (including a 20-minute break). Before the oral exam, you have 20 minutes of preparation time. The oral exam may take place on the same day as the written exam or on a different day.
