Understanding German and speaking it yourself
You may already understand a lot of German in everyday life, yet struggle to find the right words when you want to explain something yourself. Or you may be comfortable having conversations but find longer texts and complex grammar difficult.
The online placement test gives you an initial indication of your skills. At Berlitz Augsburg, we can also assess how confidently you use German in conversation through a personal oral assessment.
German placement test: understanding your level from A1 to C2
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) distinguishes six proficiency levels from A1 to C2. These describe how confidently you can use German in different situations. The following examples help you better understand your German level.
German A1–A2: basic knowledge and everyday situations
At these levels, you can ask and answer simple questions, understand familiar expressions and have short conversations. If you already have some basic German skills, you can develop them further in our German courses for beginners.
German B1–B2: communicating independently in German
You can talk about familiar topics, describe experiences and increasingly follow more complex conversations. Our German courses for advanced learners help you build on your existing language skills.
German C1–C2: advanced German skills
At the higher proficiency levels, you can understand complex content, express yourself precisely and adapt your language flexibly to different situations.
Berlitz also uses its own scale of ten language levels. Our overview of Berlitz language levels and CEFR levels explains how they relate to the CEFR.
